I really love this picture, but I think I love the image it brings to mind of the nativity even more. A bored Joseph looks on exhausted to his lipsticked-eyeshadowed-mascara’d wife and newborn stepson; Mary is feeling especially thankful and pious because the whole ordeal is over; Jesus is choking back silent sobs (and one has to wonder why, because he is a baby- maybe it’s because he’s cold because he’s completely naked). For all of its 1960’s kintziness, it’s a little bit magical.
