Emulsion.

January 3, 2010

I took a photography class at the community college my senior year, where we focused on black and white film. That’s where the name comes from, since the emulsion is the part of film which records the image. These images come from several of the assignments I had, included documentation of a speech and debate tournament. I certainly enjoyed using film and learning how to develop it and make prints from negatives myself, but digital technology makes a lot of things easier. Which isn’t always a good thing, as film can make you slow down and force you to be more thoughtful in your approach.

Sand Dunes.

December 26, 2009

These photographs come from the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, located southwest of Pueblo. My family has gone camping here several times, even spending a night on the dunes themselves. This locale contains many interesting features, patterns, and textures. Go around Labor day if you want to catch the Medano creek full with snowmelt. If you have a 4×4, try camping along the Medano pass road to avoid the crowds.

Over the years I’ve taken quite a few photos of flowers, trees, and plants in general. This gallery contains the best of what I’ve captured. Locations range from a market in Seattle to my backyard. Comment if you want more information about a particular image.

Cheyenne Mt. Zoo

November 24, 2009

These images came from a photo shoot that I went on with Malenke | Barnhart, a web design firm that my Aunt co-owns. They were taking photos for the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s website, and I got to come along. I had a great time, and even got to go behind the scenes and visit an elephant in its cage.

One or two of my photos wound up in the final design, check it out at cmzoo.org.

Canyonlands

November 24, 2009

These photos date from the 2007 canoe trip my family took down the green river in Canyonlands National Park, located in Utah. We spent a whole week floating down the river, enjoying the scenery, and taking pictures. I took over a thousand photos during the trip; this gallery contains the 35 best images, selected from both an artistic and technical perspective.

The Utah landscape contains a lot more red, yellow, and orange than the typical Colorado scene. Overall, I think it made for some striking photographs. If you would like a print or digital copy of one of the images please contact me here.
